our mother tongue is important because, To many, it means the keeping of your identity and your heritage. That's all. In a world where we get intermixed with each other so easily, it is nice to have a bit of our own identity firmly grounded in ourselves. It is who we are - what we are - from where we came. One problem in many English speaking countries is that children of immigrant families (perhaps second or third generation) do not learn their "mother" tongue and so cannot even communicate with their closest relatives, like grandmothers or grandfathers. So a good reason to learn and maintain one's "mother" tongue is to be able to keep close to and learn from your relatives. It is also important because coz mother tongue is your root.
language and culture have a great influence on your personality.
